A LOCAL charity set up to provide housing and support to young people has been praised by Aberdeenshire councillors following a visit this week to the Stonehaven premises.
Aberdeen Foyer, which also has accommodation facilities in Banchory, Peterhead, Fraserburgh and Aberdeen, has been established in Stonehaven for three years, and comprises ten one-bed roomed flats on Arduthie Road, as well as an office and communal a
rea.
Tenants, who are aged between 16 and 25, are given six-monthly leases and can stay for up to two years, while being given the support and help they need in order to prepare them for adult life.
19 year-old Karen Wardrope, who has a ten month-old daughter, Rebecca, has lived at the Foyer for a year. She says: "They are really good at supporting you and giving you help when you need it."
Through the charity, Karen has undertaken courses to reacquaint her with education, and plans to return to college later this year.
Local councillors Graeme Clark, Jean Dick, Carl Nelson, Mike Sullivan, Wendy Agnew and Tom Fleming were given a guided tour of the property on Tuesday, along with the Kincardine and Deeside Area Manager, Willie Munro.
Councillor Jean Dick said: "We were given a talk about the charity during attending a health and well-being seminar, and it sparked an interest. Collectively we requested to come and see it for ourselves."
All of the councillors said they were very impressed by the Stonehaven facility, commenting on the nicely kept flats as well as the charitable work carried out there.
Councillor Carl Nelson said: "I am quite impressed by it all. It's a great facility for young people and an ideal starting point."
Councillor Graeme Clark added: "It's really nice and very well equipped."
