A MEARNS grandmother has won a gold medal at the world masters weightlifting championships.
Jean McConville (53), a midwife who lives near Fordoun, achieved the feat two weeks ago at the competition in Kefalonia, Greece.
As well as the gold, Jean's team mates also took home two silvers and one bronze medal for Scotland.
Jean first became interested in lifting weights when, at the ago of 20, she was diagnosed with Crohn's disease and dropped to just five and a half stone. She took up competitive weightlifting ten years ago and competed for Great Britain, but decided to lift weights for Scotland when she moved from her native Yorkshire four years ago.
She said: "I just started going to the gym to try and build up my muscles. I would never give it up now, I love it. I won the gold because I'm coached by John McNiven, who is the best coach around. You just can't achieve at that level without a good coach. A lot of people have put in a lot of time to help me."
Jean has two children and two grandchildren, and she told the Leader that she has an unusual idea of what to do with her gold medal.
She said: "My grandson Daniel wants to take it into nursery for show-and-tell, bless him. So I think I'll just let him keep it after that."
Jean, who says that her friends and colleagues at Aberdeen maternity hospital are "used to" her remarkable pastime, has no intention of stopping anytime soon. She is now in training for the world championships in Warsaw, Poland in 2010.
She said: "The masterplan is to try and take the world record in Poland in 2010. So that should keep me busy for a couple of years!"
