STONEHAVEN Choral Society will celebrate 60 years of making music with a historic concert next Sunday.
A performance of Rachmaninov's Vespers at St James' Church will conclude a landmark season of singing.
The merriment commenced last November when the chorus produced their first ever CD, 'Rejoice and Be Glad!', which has been so well received it ha
s almost sold out.
On Sunday the group will mark its formation in 1947 with a recital dedicated to the memory of Rev. Finlay Squires.
A well-known local minister, Mr Squires shared his joy of singing with the choir over a period spanning more than 35 years with his rich bass voice in works such as Handel's Messiah, his all-time favourite work.
The chorus, which will perform under the musical direction of their conductor Dr John Hearne, are to be joined by two talented young soloists.
Lilly Papaioannou, an exciting mezzo-soprano, is making a very welcome return visit to Stonehaven, while the tenor soloist will be Iain Milne, originally from Inverurie.
Photographs of the choir, past and present have been included in a souvenir programme that will be available at the May 18 concert.
Choral Society vice-president and long-time member Irene Squires is delighted at the progress the group has made over the years.
She said: "In the mid sixties I moved form Glasgow to Stonehaven with my husband and young family. Although formed in 1947 as a mixed voice choir, by the mid sixties it had become a three-part ladies' choir with a small orchestra.
"By the 1970s the conductor suggested we become a mixed choir. Thus began a progression towards performance of renowned choral works. Since then we have gone from strength to strength, always being progressive, even to the present day."
As well as looking back, the chorus is also planning for future events.
They have received invitations to sing in concert in Paisley Abbey, St Machar's Cathedral and St Margaret's Church.
In addition to customary performances at Stonehaven, the choir will also take to the stage at three summer weddings.
A tour to Germany will take place in 2009.
Tickets for the concert at St James', which begins at 8pm, are available from choir members, or at the door.
