The pitch didn't look too bad, and the outfield grass was reasonably short.
Clive Hinchcliffe the visiting skipper lost the call and was invited to bat first.
This toss was important for the home side as it meant they could try and hold on for a
draw if the win looked beyond them.
With respects being paid at a local funeral, the normal batting order was altered.
Spender Milroy opened with AK Kemp and this pair looked to settle down very quickly.
The bowling was distinctly average and didn't really provide much challenge.
JJ Jessiman in his fifty second year of cricket opened at the car park end. AK hit his second delivery for 6 over the longest part of the boundary and this set the scene for both openers.
Runs came quick and fast and Thistle sensed a large score was on the cards.
It soon became obvious the visitors were after a large score off as few overs as possible.
Morrison and Jessiman were both taken off after only eight overs with the score on 50.
The bowling change however tempted Spender Milroy (28) into a big heave ho and as he crossed the line he was clean bowled by an innocuous delivery.
Drew Hinchcliffe joined AK Kemp and the run rate continued at a pace.
Some better bowling temporarily halted the run fest, however both batsmen got stuck into the bad ball with some glorious stroke play and good old fashioned "over the top" big hitting.
Hinchcliffe hit a massive six , taking him past 40 and looked to settle into a big score. This pair set themselves a target of 150 and it was on 147 that Drew Hinchcliffe (44) also succumbed to crossing the line and was also clean bowled.
Kemp (69) was also bowled shortly thereafter, however with the score on 151, it was fully expected the remaining batsmen would take the total past 200.
Denis Garden (2) came and went after taking a nick on the glove to the keeper, Nigel King was also out first ball.
With the ship starting to spring leaks Barry Milne (12) smashed three fours in a nice little cameo innings, however it was Mushtak Andy and Clive Hinchcliffe that took the game by the scruff of the neck and fought hard to take it beyond the home side's reach.
Clive Hinchcliffe (5) played the supporting role as Wilson smashed the ball around the park, even managing to join the elite "six" club with a glorious mid on shot.
Stoffs VanderRuit (0) also went first ball leaving the score on 194 from 37 overs.
Wilson (36 not out) was joined by the young David Garden (13 not out ) and together they took the total over 200 in fine fashion.
Tea was taken with Thistle declaring on a fine score of 223 for 8 wickets off 41 overs. This left them with 49 overs to bowl, which proved to be very useful.
Church Hinchcliffe opened the bowling with Stoffs vanderRuit it became immediately obvious the home side were hoping to hold on for the draw.
Few scoring shots ensued as the home side dug in, refusing to be drawn into the run chase.
Hinchcliffe however proved too good for the home side taking three wickets in as many overs, the first a skied shot caught by the bowler himself. The following two were clean bowled, leaving the home side reeling on 20 for 3 wickets off only 9 overs.
VanderRuit joined the party taking a wicket of his own, however it was Hinchcliffe again taking a fine catch at second slip.
With a hint of victory in the air Thistle's enthusiasm was building, however the killer instinct so desperately needed waned a little.
Several bowling changes were used to tempt the players into a shot, however both batsmen looked totally disinterested unless a defensive shot was the only option.
So frustrating was this ploy that Thistle's resolve was fully tested.
Nigel King (0 wickets for 2 runs off 5 overs, Pepe Long (0 wickets for 10 runs off 4 overs and Drew Hinchcliffe (0 wickets for 8 runs off 5 overs all proved ineffective against the home sides refusal to play the game.
Despite repeated calls to "ban the draw" at the Grades AGM, several thistle players knew this was one facet of the game that was a test in itself even though at times quite boring.
Andrew Wilson came on to seduce the batsmen into a rash shot and it came in his third over. The oh-so-careful Bloice finally succumbed to a rash swipe missing completely out LBW.
This signalled the return of Thistle's belief and with the home side on 50 for 5 wickets off 27 overs the visiting side could sense an important victory.
Inverurie however had not read this script and again a lengthy period of stalemate ensued.
Thistle tried everything as the draw loomed closer and closer.
Barry Milne bowled three overs for 1 run coming from a wide. Stoffs vanderRuit was reinstated and with pace and good aggression forced a rash pull shot which was toed back to the bowler. Stoffs took a delightful catch to the batsman's disbelief.
The breakthrough had been made and the return of the skipper Clive Hinchcliffe restored the faith.
His fourth over of the second spell ripped the home side apart with two wickets coming in consecutive balls, Jessiman clean bowled first ball.
With Inverurie on 92 for 8 wickets with only 5 overs remaining, the last man was very nervous.
Survival lasted four balls before Hinchcliffe (6 wickets for 23 runs off 11 overs) secured the victory in great style.
Van der Ruit finished with good figures of 2 wickets for 19 runs off 10 overs.
This win proved Thistle can hold their own at the top of grade 1 and are relishing the challenges ahead. Thistle must prepare properly for their next game playing Cults away.
With both 1st and 2nd teams at the top of the grades, this is proving to be the best start to any season for a very long time. The match ball was sponsored by Foster Plant Services.
