A VERITABLE feast of birdies and eagles was served up at Stonehaven Golf Club on Sunday when 38 teams contested the Neil Selbie and Co Texas Scramble competition.
In near-perfect conditions, only those teams with the hottest of putters had any chance and the trophy was lifted with a remarkable score of 50.1 by a team named Monty's Last Stand.
Two club members, Jacek Nowak and David Cusiter, were joined by fr
iends from Craigielaw GC, near Edinburgh, David McLaughlin and Steve Livingstone, and playing off a 4.9 handicap, they just pipped Cally's Angels by the narrowest of margins, 0.2.
The winners started in style with an eagle at the first, thanks to Cusiter driving to the back of the green and then holing his putt.
That set them up nicely and nine birdies followed in halves of 27 and 28.
The new four-drives rule, however, caused them some grief and they arrived at the last hole with 11-handicapper Steve Livingstone still one drive short.
Into the breeze, however, he nailed a three wood to the centre of the green and Cusiter, with the team's last putt, secured a birdie and the trophy.
Cally's Angels (Alan Cruickshank, David Callaghan, Mark Geraghty and Euan Kennedy), playing off 2.7, returned the best gross score of the day with 54, one better than the winners, thanks to a four-iron hole-in-one at the seventh by Alan Cruickshank.
They played the first nine holes in only 25 shots, starting with five birdies, but just fell short at the end of the day.
The two rule changes introduced by Willie Donald, a director of the event's sponsors, proved popular in the main.
Just about everyone welcomed the decision to allow placing of the ball rather than dropping but the four-drives-per-player rule proved slightly more controversial.
It certainly forced teams to think much more about their strategy when choosing drives, particularly teams with a mixture of high and low handicappers, and it also involved all the players much more in the contest, which must be good.
However, if more ladies or junior teams are to be attracted in future, the handicap maximum of six might have to be looked at. The current rule does tend to penalise teams with four high-handicap players.
Overall, however, a very successful day's golf.

Smart new lounge furniture was installed in the clubhouse last week and has received much favourable comment from members and visitors. It was made possible thanks to a sponsorship agreement reached with local company Groundwater Lift Trucks. More about this in a future column.
