AT the end of the busiest and toughest golfing weekend of the season so far at Stonehaven, only seven shots separated the 24 qualifiers after the first two rounds of the Handicap Trophy.
That means, unusually, that everyone in the field still has a realistic chance and that will have added spice to the play in the third round, on Wednesday, and the final round on Friday.
A full report of the action in the last two rounds will appea
r in next week's Leader.
An awkward wind from the north-west made conditions difficult on both the Saturday and Sunday qualifying rounds and it was the mid-range handicappers who reaped the benefit, with two players receiving 12 shots, Gary Daun and Ian Harrison, topping the leader board.
The in-form Mike Rendall (15), helped by a net 63 on Saturday, lies one shot behind, alongside Gary Brown (5), Roy cliff (12|) and Stuart Wood (11).

*Saturday's round also doubled up as the second qualifying round for the D F Leslie Shield, the club's scratch match-play championship.
Teenager Iain Taylor, whose 62 earlier last month remains the best round of the season so far, shared first place on 138 with veteran Neil Irvine, both of them shooting successive rounds of 69.
Euan Kennedy's second round was 13 shots worse than his first round but he was still well inside the qualifying mark of 153.
The 12 qualifiers will now play match-play through to the final later in the season.

*It would be grossly unfair to say that Malcolm Macewen has made a career of inflicting pain on others, but the recently retired dentist certainly struck some raw nerves among the senior members of the club with a superb net score of 61 on Monday in the first round of the club's Senior Championship.
The 11-handicapper leads by two shots in the handicap section for the Carnegie Cup and also tops the scratch leader board alongside Neil Robertson and Donald Gordon in the race for the Taylor Trophy.
The second round will be held on Monday with the final round on Friday, June 13.

*Stonehaven junior boys, who have been having a tough time in this year's Aberdeen & District Pennant League, had a confidence-boosting win at home over Craibstone at the weekend.
The visitors, unfortunately, turned up two boys short, thus conceding a point before tee off.
In the top match, Craig Irvine and Alisdair Steel led two single-figure boys by two up with three to play but Craibstone finished eagle, birdie, par to snatch a dramatic half.
This prevented a clean sweep for the home team. Craig Starrs and Fraser Stark were behind for most of their match but drew level when Craig birdied the fifteenth. The Stonehaven pair won the sixteenth, lost the next but clinched a one hold victory with a 3 at the last.
Ross McAllan and Josh Halliday were up early on in their match but reached the gully one down. They steadied up there, however, winning three of the remaining holes to clinch a 2&1 win.
Stonehaven were always in command in the last two matches and won comfortably.
Finally, the shot of the day came at the first in the last match, when Daryl Benton, a 19 handicapper, landed his tee shot on the green.
Stonehaven 5½ Craibstone ½: Craig Irvine/Alisdair Steel halved with Connor Rennie/Lewis Penny; Craig Starrs/Fraser Stark beat Connor Rae/Chris Hardie 1 up; Ross McAllan/Josh Halliday beat Michael Yule/Greig Gerraty 2&1; Kevin Riddell/Scott Murray beat Andrew Coull.Gren Penny 7&6; Mark Wiseman/Daryl Benton beat Blair Sutherland/Rory Collinson 8&7; Sam Wright/Greig Cooper walk over.
