AT this time of year the members would normally have just completed their first game of the winter league but due to the changing climate the Council thought it would be a good idea to hold medals through the month of October.
Typically the weather on Saturday consisted of howling winds, heavy showers and freezing cold temperatures. It was so bad that only four hardy souls returned a completed score.
Top of the leader board was council member Jacek Nowak with a nett scor
e of 71. Other scores included David Cusiter(nett 72), David Paterson (nett 81) and Steve Patterson (nett 84).Hopefully there will be a vast improvement in the weather this Saturday.
One of the remaining major knockout competitions was completed on Sunday. Seasoned campaigners Bob Leggate and Malcolm MacEwan were successful in overcoming youngsters Iain Taylor and Stuart Soutar.
The final was played in blustery conditions which contributed to some scrappy golf, but the game was tight with never more than one hole in it throughout. Soutar and Taylor led by one hole at the turn, but started back poorly losing the 10th and 11th.
However wins at the 13th and 14th saw them 1 up with four holes to play. MacEwan then produced a nett birdie at the 15th and a birdie at the 17th resulting in a 1 hole win for the grizzled veterans. This was their first win in this competition since they last won it in 1992. Only outstanding competitions to be completed are the 36 hole Willie Watt final between Eric Dickie and Dave Summers and also the playoff for the Innes Medal between Gordon Adamson and Eric Innes.
There was a bit of a senior moment from "Controlled Fade" in last week's report with the result of the Freeland Family Foursomes. Winners were Neil and Scott Murray and not Ally Reid and Ross McAllan, who were runners up.
Members are reminded to get their names in for the Winter League starting on the first week of November. There is also an entry sheet up for a junior winter league. Hopefully there will be a bit more interest than previous years. Juniors have the option of playing their game on either Saturday or Sunday.
This winter, in partnership with Aspire to Golf Ltd, the juniors have been given the opportunity to receive coaching through the winter months. Juniors are reminded to return their coaching questionnaire to the club this weekend.
Last year's winners are again reminded to return their trophies to the club as soon as possible. This year's annual prizegiving will be held on November 8. Catering arrangements will be confirmed after this week's Council meeting and tickets will go on sale from this weekend. This year's guest speaker is Les Peters, one of Scotland's top after dinner speakers.
