The match was played on a full size rugby pitch for the first time, and to a set of new rules (including conversions), but it was only in size that these Minis looked out of place in their new surroundings. Both sides produced rugby that would grace
any game at senior level, with skill levels and commitment second to none.
It was Lathallan who started brightest, scoring directly from the kick-off, with the ball being transferred quickly along the back line for a fine score in the corner, which went unconverted.
Mackie did not let their heads go down however, and were soon back in the game. The forwards continuously re-cycled good ball for their backs, which they used to good effect and soon crossed the line themselves to level the scores.
Mackie continued to dominate up front and the forwards were soon encamped on the opposition try line. Lathallan tried hard to clear their lines, but Mackie would not let them settle on the ball and soon regained possession which led to another try.
A further try by Mackie spurred Lathallan into action and it was they who finished the half the strongest team with another try, to make the half time score 9-6 to Mackie.
The second half saw each team draw upon all their reserves of strength in a fight to the final whistle, with some outstanding support running and tackling on display from both sides.
During the second half, Mackie not only took control of proceedings, but they also scored their first ever conversion to round off an excellent afternoons entertainment which had been enjoyed by the large crowd gathered at Redcloak.
Mackie eventually ran out winners, 19-10.
