SUNDAY saw an early start for the P5 Mackie Minis as they made the long trip south to Dunfermline to compete in there annual tournament.
Mackie were drawn against hosts Dunfermline Knights, Kircaldy and Heriots, each game was to consist of two 7 minute halves, on a warm day this was to be a test of endurance as well as rugby skills.
Kircaldy were a decent team and gave the Mackie bo
ys a bit of a wake up call, any thoughts of an easy day were well and truly dismissed, ultimately the Stonehaven outfit were too strong for Kircaldy and ran out comfortable winners. Heriots were a different kettle of fish, a big bunch of lads they matched the Mackie team time and time again and at one point were winning 4 – 2, what was to follow is one of the great comebacks seen at this level where the Mackie boys scored three tries in as many minutes to win a great match and break the hearts of the mighty Edinburgh Heriots. Dunfermline Knights were an altogether different matter, this was a stroll in the park for Mackie winning comfortably 15 tries for no reply.
After a short break Mackie took to the pitch to play Perth in the semifinal, by now the boys were in full flow and nobody was going to stop them reaching the final, 6 – 2 Mackie
The final saw Mackie take on the other host team Dunfermline Kings, although this was there top team the Mackie players stuck to the now very successful game plan of "close defence" again this worked a treat not giving the local lads any room to play so much so that at one point the Mackie team gained over half the pitch in territory without even touching the ball. The final score was 8 – 2 to Mackie, they had won and in the process played some of there best rugby ever, yes, there were many great individual performances, but this was all about team work something that few could match and many would envy.
