MACKIE S1s made the trip to Glasgow for the Lexus tournament which involved three English teams and two Scottish sides all playing 12 aside rugby over 14 minutes.
The age range of the teams were all slightly older than the S1s but on what turned out to be fine day the boys played some good rugby.
First up the S1s played Penrith and with five minutes on the clock Mackie ran in the first score with some fast r
unning from their pacey back line.
The game continued to ebb and flow with Mackie performing a little below par in the contact area but passing the ball well across the backs.
Penrith from a missed tackle ran up and scored a quick try and by the end of the game they had put a further three scores on the board.
Not to be deterred Mackie played Northern and Billingham both feeder clubs to Newcastle Falcons and for large periods Mackie controlled the play showing good aggression along with strong ball retention.
This enabled the forwards to carry the ball well over the oppositions gain line and with good understanding between the scrum half and fly half they were able to get the ball through the hands releasing the fastbacks in to good scoring positions.
Mackie lost by the odd try despite playing the better rugby overall their inexperience being the deciding factor.
In the other games against Cartha and Currie Mackie ran in a total of 10 tries running out convincing winners with some excellent play.
The boys performed very well. Against bigger players they controlled the scrums and really drove well in the rucks.
This combined with good running, passing and offloads, getting the ball through the hands quickly created space on the outside for the faster players to get involved.
